Isabel Cleave believes only in science. Deaths happen because of poor health, evening light requires electricity, and there's no such thing as miracles.

But when she is adopted at 10 years old due to the sudden death of her parents, everything starts to turn on her. Sick people make sudden turns for the better, healthy people die suddenly, and most interesting of all, Josephine's house becomes very bright every Christmas, even without electricity.
